About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. Blender Animation Book

I've written a book about Rigging and Animation in Blender for Packt Publishing. You can get the files here.

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

[update] Hey guys! Happy April Fools' Day!

The same way I did last year, I've made up this joke specially for this day. Of course I didn't sell my car. I know Blender is not "freeware", neither "amateur". ;)

Unfortunately, Brad Bird doesn't follow my blog nor invited me to work at Pixar (but if you, guys at Pixar, think it's a cool idea... I have NOTHING against that, hehe) That was part of the joke, too. One thing I left as a tip for this joke is to have Brad Bird refer to animation as a "genre": he hates when people do that!

Thank you for all comments and visits! The "Carl Bass" comment was hilarious!!! :D

[/update]

I'm tired of sticking with an amateur 3D app. I've sold my car and purchased a copy of Maya. NOW I'm gonna go pro! :)

You know... Blender is a cute app, but isn't ready for real PRO things, like character animation, rigging, compositing and so on. This freeware thing is also nice, but you get what you pay for, right?

Thinking of that, I decided to take my productions to the next level: I sold my car and borrowed a few hundred bucks to buy a licence of Maya 2011. Now I'm gonna do real character animation. Stay tuned for amazing animations soon!

Virgilio,

I follow your blog for a long time, and I'm touched by your commitment to the animation genre. To sell your car in favor of animation is a gesture of love for this beautiful genre of cinema.

I, in behalf of the Pixar executives, invite you to join our team. We always look for people interested in mastering 3D tools, because this is the real business of the company.

You got my e-mail in this comment. Answer me as quickly as possible if you are interested in working at Pixar. I'll be talking to the HR team to see what we can make in advance.

All the best,

Brad Bird

Hello, Mr. Bird!

Sir.. I'm speechless! My hands are shaking right now... I've just sent you an e-mail to confirm that I'D LOVE to work at Pixar!

Just. Can't. Believe.

AWESOME!!!!! WOHOOOOO!!!

The best thing I ever did was to quit using Blender.

oh what a coincidence! you decided to abandon blender the exact same day as i managed to compile it to run on iphone. even a professional app like maya can not run on a great visual platform for artists like the iphone os.
please reconsider buying a new car and switching back to blender. maybe u can get a job at the blender institute
meanwhile i wish you a nice and very fun day :)
respectful yours
o

Heh, almost got me there. PRO eh? hahaha! I kept laughing when I was reading this post.

To all aspiring 3d artists: Want to go pro? Go sell your car or something and purchase this heaaaavy "industry-standard" app and maybe, just maybe your skills will improve (just maybe, hopefully).

Tsk.

It was about time. I've always told you to do this move, now you realize how important is to choose a professional tool that sync with your ambitions. Mr.Virg, now you'll see the colors of the real world, but don't take me wrong, Blender is like a small pet, cute, funny, but when you need some action the Pitbull do the job.

Congratulation for this bold move!

April, April...this is my month. I was born at the 16th of April...the day of cosmic comedy. Yes, Charlie Chaplin was born that day too.

Professionally I am working with Maya and MotionBuilder.

In case of Blender...the only thing what I asking for would be a Collada plugin not just export vertex skin bindings, but the full grayscale for soft binded characters.

If I would have the money I would set a team figuring out a professional solution to export and import full rigged characters and bvh data.

I hope the blender developer guys get the point one day. Students need to switch and film school cant teach Blender because this gap.

Well, that's a heck of a coincidence. We here at Autodesk have just decided to release the source code for Maya under the GPL! We figure we may as well just give up now that everybody's switching to Blender.

Unfortunately, we can't give any refunds for the copy you already bought. Sorry about your car.

Hi LetterRip!

The first time I saw the alpha of Blender 2,50 I thought I'd stepped into a parallel universe and been cross-connected to the 3DS Max site!

Our prayers have been answered and Blender now 'follows' the 'standard' UI as given us by 3DS all those years ago... PS - I started with the old version 2....

Good for you! I've been trying to get up the guts to do this, but my car is only wroth about $700 for parts, and that isn't enough. Now I am sure you will finally be able to produce something of quality, and will look back on all your Blender work as just so much crap and wasted effort. Best of luck.
