About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:

Blender Animation Book

I've written a book about Rigging and Animation in Blender for Packt Publishing. You can get the files here.

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

Very quick post (looking like Twitter), but with a cool thing: three videos that sum up 15 minutes from behind the scenes of Up.

While this movie does not have it's premiére in Brazil (shame on you, Disney Brasil), we have to look for these goodies on 'teh internets'.

This guy is really awesome... now he refined his method of polishing that I talked about some time ago, and it now works in a non-destructive way in Blender rigs:

All scripts are available on his website, and the rig used on the above video was created by the Brazilian animator MangoJambo.

2009-Jul-03: A bit of news

After a while without news here there's time for an update. :)

I'm currently in a production of an animated video clip for a the band Black Drawing Chalks, and I'm pretty busy with it. It will have a mix of 2D and 3D animation, and everything is looking pretty sweet by now. :D

Exactly a week ago I went to the première of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinossaurs in 3-D. Besides some bad critics I've read, I found it to be much better than the second film of this franchise. The animation - as usual for Blue Sky crew - is fantastic, and I also found the the story stronger than The Meltdown. In addition to that, I think the new character - Buck - is one of the best of the three movies.

Another news from the Blue Sky Studios is their new movie, also directed by Brazilian Carlos Saldanha. It's a story of a Brazilian bird that suddenly have to live outside its cage, in Rio de Janeiro. I found it pretty cool, and you can read the press release on the studio's website and this article in Portuguese.

And there's more: I've seen two neat trailers for upcoming animations this year. First comes Sony's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs:

And from the Spanish Ilion Studios, bringing the second trailer for Planet 51:

We still have some pretty cool movies this year, huh? ;)

2009-Jun-24: Up Easter Eggs
Up Easter Eggs

As you may know, Pixar's Up will be released in Brazil only in September. But I'm not afraid of spoilers, so I looked at this cool tip by @tatasoka on Twitter:

The traditional Easter Eggs on the new Pixar movie. As usual, you'll find references to the Pizza Planet truck, a character from an upcoming movie and, of course, John Ratzemberger among other things... :)

If you haven't watched this yet and you're not afraid of spoilers, go there!

Man... until yesterday I didn't notice that Keith Lango has his own video channel on YouTube! oO

There is a lot of cool stuff there, with precious info for your animation studies. It is not like having direct feedback on your work and custom exercises, like APT, but it is always good to see and hear what Keith has to say. :)

The most recent video is not an animation class, in the strict meaning of the word. But it can be viewed as one which sums up pretty much everything what Keith teaches:
