About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:

Blender Animation Book

I've written a book about Rigging and Animation in Blender for Packt Publishing. You can get the files here.

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

2010-May-10: Design.exe
Design.exe

I had to take a little break from the loads of work to give some attention to this blog, :)

Tomorrow I'll fly to Londrina, to give a lecture on Animation, 3D and Free Software at Design.exe. I'm very honored to be listed among such talented people, and I want to thank everyone at Unopar and specially Mango Jambo, from Oniria, for suggesting my name. I'll be very happy to finally meet him in person. :D

-----

Another great Blender artist I met recently was Cícero Moraes, who came to Goiânia to give a great lecture at Flisol. :)

-----

And among the lots of things that have keeping me busy these days is my second Animation Personal Trainer session with the great animator/teacher Keith Lango. As soon as I finish it I'll post my results.

See you guys next post. ;)

2010-Apr-09: Pixels

Yeah... I know. You have already watched this video in a gazillion different blogs today. But that's so amazing I think it deserves to be watched one more time:

2010-Apr-06: rm *

If you ever used Linux (or a Unix like OS), you probably know that the command rm * erases EVERYTHING. rm -Rf * is even worse. Now think of the damage it can cause in the folder of production files from a movie like... Toy Story 2!?!

This is one of the curious stories from Pixar, released as extras on the Blu-Ray editions of Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Some of these videos are online at slashfilm. Have fun! :)

...that only teh internets can bring us:

A Goofy Movie, if directed by David Lynch:

The world famous Trololo, in the Woody Woodypecker version:

And in order to bring a bit of usefulness to this post: if you haven't watched Dreamworks' How To Train Your Dragon yet, please go. It's a really amazing movie. In my humble opinion, it holds the position of best movie made by the studio, together with Kung Fu Panda. Congrats to everyone who worked on it!

[update] Hey guys! Happy April Fools' Day!

The same way I did last year, I've made up this joke specially for this day. Of course I didn't sell my car. I know Blender is not "freeware", neither "amateur". ;)

Unfortunately, Brad Bird doesn't follow my blog nor invited me to work at Pixar (but if you, guys at Pixar, think it's a cool idea... I have NOTHING against that, hehe) That was part of the joke, too. One thing I left as a tip for this joke is to have Brad Bird refer to animation as a "genre": he hates when people do that!

Thank you for all comments and visits! The "Carl Bass" comment was hilarious!!! :D

[/update]

I'm tired of sticking with an amateur 3D app. I've sold my car and purchased a copy of Maya. NOW I'm gonna go pro! :)

You know... Blender is a cute app, but isn't ready for real PRO things, like character animation, rigging, compositing and so on. This freeware thing is also nice, but you get what you pay for, right?

Thinking of that, I decided to take my productions to the next level: I sold my car and borrowed a few hundred bucks to buy a licence of Maya 2011. Now I'm gonna do real character animation. Stay tuned for amazing animations soon!
